Skrowaczewski began practicing the piano at the age of four, but by the age of seven he had already composed his first work, an Overture, in the Classical style with a two-pipe orchestrationjust like Mozart. Although he had aspired to become a pianist, he suffered a hand injury during German bombing raids in World War II. He began studying in earnest under the renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris in 1947, which led him to pursue composition in earnest. Thereafter, while continuing his career as a conductor, he also composed enthusiastically, creating 15 orchestral worksincluding concertosand four chamber music pieces.
