The Latvian National Choir has been in existence for more than 75 years. Since 1997, Maris ilmais of Latvia has served as its artistic director and chief conductor; in addition to concerts featuring a cappella works, the choir has performed large-scale works with internationally renowned orchestras. Along with the Latvian Radio Choir, it ranks among Europes leading choral ensembles.In 2018, as the Republic of Latvia celebrated its 100th anniversary of independence, the Latvian National Choir and irmais launched a project to create a new Latvian song that could be sung by both professional and amateur singers. They commissioned works from 77 musicians representing a diverse range of genres and styles, including members of the youngest generation.
