Among 20th-century composers, Hovhannes (19112000) ranks among the top one or two in terms of the sheer volume of his output. In particular, his 67 symphonies remain highly popular today due to their diverse styles and striking character. Born to an Armenian father, he was mentored by Sibelius in his youth. After encountering Indian music, he developed an interest in folk songs from around the world, ultimately devoting himself to Armenian music.
