The Stravinsky SACD hybrid disc is the ultimate in precision, as only Mravinsky can deliver. The CD back cover says the former is from a 1964 Finnish broadcast and the latter from a 1983 Moscow broadcast in effect stereo, remastered by the master Karel Soukeniuk. The 1947 version is Mravinsky’s only recording of the Petrushka, recorded live in Leningrad on October 24, 1964, and is unique for its astonishing ensemble precision and drive. The remastering has brought out the subtle nuances of the music, and the result is astonishing. The “The Fairy’s Kiss” is a recording with some controversy: when the same recording was released on Russian Disc, it was pointed out that there were no performances at that time and that Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic had only performed the piece twice in 1965.
