Sviatoslav Richter (March 20, 1915 – August 1, 1997) is considered the greatest pianist of the 20th century. The young Richter thrilled listeners with his intensely exuberant and extremely focused playing, but his playing gradually shifted toward a more introspective direction of expression. In the Haydn sonatas on this disc, he emphasizes classicality, but at the same time, his performances are full of lyricism and graceful, compassionate expression, and are full of flavor. (C)RS
