The long-awaited live recording of Chai 4, Kondrashin’s first recorded repertoire, which has been described as a phantom source, is now available! Even Lieutenant Kyger was awed by the sheer volume of information in this performance! Surprisingly, there is no recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 conducted by Kondrashin, either on LP or CD. This album is the first time we can hear his interpretation. The tempo is fast and direct, with a driving force that is only possible with Kondrashin. The power and swell of the music are in the Russian tradition, but the bright sound of the Orchestre National de Radio France makes the effect more theatrical than anguish and despairing.
