Stokowski’s gorgeous collection of Tchaikovsky’s three late symphonies! Although Stokowski was active for a remarkably long period of time, there are surprisingly few recordings of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies, which are so perfectly suited to his artistic style. This is a live performance during the war in the U.S., so the master is still in good health and gives a strong performance. The recording of No. 4 is a session recording with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and was probably made possible by the fact that Toscanini did not add this piece to his repertoire. The studio recording is neat, but its detailed alterations and instructions are clearly evident. No. 5 is another piece that Toscanini did not conduct.
