Pleyel (17571831), known as a renowned piano maker, studied composition under Haydn and piano under Vanhal, and performed as a pianist throughout the region. The works included in this album are almost entirely previously unknown. For example, the Concerto-Symphony in B-flat major was written in the 1760s, during his time working as F.X. Richter in Strasbourg; although it is generally considered a single-movement work, it is clear from the historical records that it originally had a first movement. Here, the movement has been reconstructed based on the score written for viola and keyboard instrument and is performed as the first movement. The program also features other intriguing works based on meticulous research, such as a rare violin concerto. [Comment provided by Naxos Japan]—
