Charles Avison, hailed in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as the greatest English composer of the 18th century, was born in Newcastle, in northern England, where he worked tirelessly as a teacher, conductor, entrepreneur, and composer, establishing his reputation as a leading musician in the region. His concertos, Op. 3 and Op. 4, are written in the Italian style of concertato, with the string ensemble divided into two sectionsthe solistico (solo part) and the ripieno (accompaniment)creating a dramatic contrast between the two. At the same time, there are plenty of moments where the solo violinist showcases his virtuosity. Aviss collection of concertos, Op. 6, is currently available on Naxos 8.557553/4.
