• When this double LP suddenly appeared on the shelves of jazz departments in the seventies of the last century, it had become quite quiet around the ‘monk’. Concerts? No way! Any news from the studio? Not at all! The attempts of various managers, festival organisers and club owners to lure Monk out of his apartment, to say goodbye to the TV screen and to present new or old things on the concert stages of the world, all failed.
  The 1963 tour with the dates in Japan and this album put together from it offered the normal ‘concert routine’, but the long played out themes spiced with standards like “Just A Gigolo” or “I’m Gettin’ Sentimental Over You” made the audience and the collectors sit up and take notice. And: weren’t “Blue Monk”, “Epistrophy” and “Bemsha Swing” not already known, often hea
