American composer Larry Lipkis is also highly regarded as a performer of Renaissance music. He has composed over 100 works, and in this album, drawing on his deep knowledge of early music, he presents four concertos inspired by the characters of the traditional Italian improvisational mask theater, Commedia dellArte. In each piece, the characters personalities are vividly portrayed through the distinctive qualities of the instruments: the bassoon humorously portrays the mischievous Pierrot, the violin lightheartedly captures the fickle and charming Colombina, the flute singing the youthful Innamorata (the maiden in love) with purity, and the bass trombone boldly portraying the acrobatic and humorous Arlecchino (Arlequin).
