In fact, Shostakovich was a prolific composer of film scores, having written music for nearly 40 films over his lifetime. While much of his music is captivating, it is rarely recorded or performed, making it a veritable gold mine of undiscovered gems. The music for *The Horse Thief* was composed for a film depicting 19th-century Italian independence fighters. It is surprisingly accessible; in particular, the seventh track, Prelude, has a tingly (sweet) quality reminiscent of classic Italian romance films. Five Days and Five Nights is an extremely rare work, and in The Liberation of Dresden, Beethovens Ode to Joy is used to build tension.
