Bottesini (18211889), known as the Paganini of the double bass, was born in 1821 in Crema, northern Italy. He began studying music at the age of five, sang in a church choir, and played the timpani in a local orchestra. The two works for double bass included here were composed during his student years, and both are magnificent pieces that fully showcase the instruments unique characteristics. The Fantasia on a Theme by Rossini begins with a fierce tarantella, moves through a sentimental middle section, and concludes with a stormy finale. A brilliant *Passione Amorosa* and a concerto that is incredibly cooleven with piano accompaniment. The Grand Duet is performed in its original version for two double basses alone.
