Born in Bergamo, he studied in Rome before settling and working in Amsterdam. While Locatelli is best known for his collection *The Art of Violin Playing*, Op. 3a set of pieces requiring virtuosic technique said to have greatly influenced the later Paganinihis Op. 4, *Six Theatrical Overtures and Concertos*, is a collection consisting of pieces resembling overtures for theatrical works and concertos for orchestra. Although these are string ensemble pieces rather than solo concertos, the solo parts are brimming with the technical virtuosity characteristic of Locatelli.
