Satoko is a singer and gusli player living in Novgorod, a city in medieval Russia. After singing about his ambitions at a banquet held by the citys guild of wealthy merchants, Satoko is branded a con artist who has insulted the guild and is banished. As Satoko wanders along the lakeshore singing, Volkhova, the daughter of the Sea King, appears, captivated by his song. She tells him that she is destined to marry a human, and if he accepts this, she will reveal a secreta magical golden fishthat will bring him immense wealth.
