Faitiche, the label headed by Jan Jelinek, has released the debut solo album by Topu Lyo, a Tokyo-based Korean-American cellist, sound artist, and composer! Recorded in an apartment in Tokyo, this album features 16 short pieces created using only solo cello and a Roland 301 Space Echo, blending abstract drones with rhythmic pizzicato. Through extended cello techniquessuch as playing with slowly and smoothly shifting pitches, as well as utilizing LFO, filters, detuning, and noisehe recreates electronic music effects, drawing a rich sonic world from this acoustic instrument. Furthermore, ambient soundssuch as the sounds of cars passing on a nearby highway and public announcements from the cityserve as key elements of the work. A delicate and experimental album where tranquility and urban clamor intertwine.
