When people talk about Haydns trios, theyre usually referring to his piano trios, where the piano takes center stage, the violin follows along, and the cello typically plays a token melody. However, in these flute trios, the flute is given center stage. Its unclear why he chose the flute for these works, but it may have been out of a need to promote the instrument to the British aristocracy. That said, most of the autograph manuscripts have been lost, making it impossible to pinpoint the exact composition dates.
