Set in the mountains of Sicily, this work depicts a harrowing story stemming from a tangled love triangle and is known as a masterpiece of Verismo operaa realist movement popular in the early 20th century that emphasized direct emotional expression through depictions of the raw realities of everyday life and violent scenes. In this production, the setting is a Sicilian village in the 1940s; the square at the center of the stage is a space open to the public, yet it is also sometimes used as a private space for intimate encounters.
