Alessandro Scarlatti, father of Domenico Scarlatti, famous for his 555 keyboard sonatas, was active and influential mainly in Naples and Rome. This album features four of his chamber cantatas, which occupy an important place among his works, along with operas and church music, and four selected longer pieces from his relatively early years (none of the scores have been published). After being appointed at a young age to the position of director of music at the court of the king of Naples, the small chamber cantatas that colored the private pleasures of the discerning nobility and high-ranking clergymen were of great significance in the course of his rise to prominence in Rome, where important people from all over Europe gathered.
