Master Marek Janowski and the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra record Puccio’s opera “The Mantle” on SACD hybrid disc. Marek Janowski is a maestro who has been actively engaged in performance recording. Following his recording of Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” (PTC 5186772) with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the second recording is of Puccini’s “The Mantle,” an opera in one act premiered in 1918 at the Metropolitan Theater in New York City. The Mantle is the first of a trilogy that includes “The Nun Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi. Based on Didier Gordo’s play “The Mantle,” the libretto was written by Giuseppe Adami. Set on the banks of the Seine in Paris, the opera ends in a shocking tragedy when Michele, the old captain of a baggage ship, strangles his subordinate Luigi over a dispute over his wife Giorgetta. Puccini has created a symphonic version of this work with a truly dramatic melody.
