Although “Macbeth” was not popular in Italy at the time, Verdi (1813-1901) described it as “the greatest tragedy ever created by mankind” and at one point even wrote the script in prose himself. Piave eventually prepared the script, but Verdi was not satisfied with the quality of the play, and he put so much into it that he had to revise it many times. In order to perform “Macbeth,” it was important to have “singers with strong personalities” for Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. In this production, the presence of Zampieri as Lady Macbeth, not to mention the talented Bruson, is crucial. Her singing, coupled with the thick, sticky sound of Sinopoli’s conducting, spits out venom continuously. Together with the darkened stage, this production is sure to leave a strong impression. N
