This opera, *The North Star*, is a work that Meyerbeer adapted from the music of his earlier opera *Camp in Silesia*, which had premiered in Berlin in 1844 and enjoyed great popularity; he received an offer to stage a French-language version at the Opra-Comique.It features a French libretto by Eugne Scribe and is characterized by a unique plot that blends pastoral romantic intrigue with scenes of military life. Possessing a unique character that is both a comedy and a serious drama, it is a compelling opera featuring lavish orchestration and frequent use of powerful choruses. Catherines mad scene toward the end is also a highlight. This recording captures a performance from the 1996 Wexford Festival.
