The Grindbourne Festival presented the premiere of *Die Meistersinger von Nrnberg*. In this new production directed by the hugely popular British opera director David McVicar, the opera is set in the early 19th century, during Wagners childhood. Vicky Mortimers artistically striking set design was a visual feast, and McVicars theatrical masterybringing every character, right down to the crowd, to lifewas truly outstanding.Among the singers, Gerald Finley (Sachs), making his debut in a Wagner opera, commanded the stage with his commanding vocal performance and received a standing ovation from the audience.
