Christie brings to life the operas of Cavalli, a pupil of Monteverdi and a hugely popular 17th-century composerIn the mid-17th century, as commercial theaters opened one after another in Venice and opera performances flourished, Cavalli gained immense fame as a popular opera composer. One of his masterpieces, *La Didone*, is considered the oldest surviving musical work based on episodes from Virgils famous *Aeneid*. This opera depicts the wanderings of the hero Aeneas following the fall of Troy and his tragic romance with Dido, Queen of Carthage, while replacing the originals tragic ending with a happy ending that brings salvation to the heartbroken Dido.This performance is a live recording from the Thtre de Caen in northwestern France, a co-production between the Thtre des Champs-lyses, the Thtre de Caen, and the Thtre Municipal de Luxembourg.
