Bachs birth in 2014, the Hensler label is releasing a series of new recordings; this album features the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra performing the six symphonies known as the Hamburg Symphonies.These six sinfonias were written for string orchestra and are works that exhibit a rather chamber-music-like cohesion. They were commissioned in 1773 by Baron Gottfried van Swieten, who was staying in Berlin as the Austrian ambassador, after Bach had moved from Berlin to Hamburg in 1768. Since he was asked to compose without regard to any technical difficulties in performance, the musical ideas are bold and unconventional for their time.
